Coldplay released their tenth studio album “Moon Music” on Oct. 4, three years after their last album. Coming in with ten songs adding up to 44 minutes of relaxing, space sounds. The album as a whole has a very contemporary sound and features six different features throughout.
They begin with their title song “MOON MUSiC,” which opens the album to soft synth sounds leading to a melodic piano noise. The first lyrics begin at minute three, starting the album off with a soft, floaty feel.
Their second, titled “Feelslikeimfallinginlove,” is a definite return to classic Coldplay rock sounds, it features higher paced synth and has happier lyrics and melody. This song would hit best with fans of Coldplay’s older music and is one of the better tracks on the album for that reason.
“WE PRAY,” is the third song and is a jump from their usual sound. It’s much more psychedelic, with repetitive lyrics and has orchestral elements at points. This piece featured Little Simz, Burna Boy, Elyanna, and Tini.
Coming forth, “JUPiTER” starts off with a classic acoustic guitar part and features strong vocals singing about a love interest in the first half. The second features a dominant chorus sound, then moves back to a relaxing outro transitioning into song five.
That next one being named “GOOD FEELiNGS,” featuring Ayra Starr, goes back to a pop rock sound with a definite summer feeling, though it was released in the fall. This song feels happier than most other songs, having an emphasis on a relationship and the ‘good feelings’ it gave the two main individuals.
The sixth song in the album is more of an interlude halfway through, being titled with nothing but a rainbow emoji. This track again feels like taking a space walk and floating in the infinite void of outer space with lots of blip sounds and synth. Throughout its five minute length, the song stays with a nice and calming shoegaze melody.
“iAAM,” the seventh song, the pace begins back up with long standing vocals, sounding like a motivational story. This song again features acoustic guitar again and is definitely more vocal focused rather than the songs that lean more on synth elements.
The eighth song moves back to techno sounds and could easily make a good dance track. “AETERNA,” features heavy synth and a fast paced beat. In addition, the lyrics don’t detract from the rest of the song as it’s not the strongest element in the music.
“ALL MY LOVE” is ninth, which as the title suggests, leans heavily on love themes and has a melodic piano part to it as well featuring strong vocals, along with the accompanying music video. It shows the main character giving balloons to everyone he can, showing a different meaning to the song and album as a whole. Shifting the focus to him giving his love to the world itself, showing a message of peace and preaching the world should show more love to one another.
Finally, “ONE WORLD,” seven minutes long, hits home the idea of showing love to the world and everyone on it. Musically it is a very gradual buildup to the verses, the first five minutes slowly evolve one element at a time. In the final two minutes, there’s around ten seconds of complete silence before being interrupted by bird calls and a melody that rounds out the album.
All in all, this studio album can be seen as a profession of love to the world. The album creates this feeling through the use of songs that are slightly different from one another. The band is also on tour this year and next, their world tour takes them to eight cities in the U.S. The closest venue to Delaware is Nashville, Tennessee on July 22 at 6 p.m.
