The senior class started taking their first steps towards graduation on May 8. They wrapped up their last times at Hayes through senior awards.
During senior awards, admin announced scholarships that were won through the Delaware County Foundation as well as scholarships through the high school. They also recognized standout students in athletics and academics.
The program started off with the elementary schools getting the opportunity to recognize former students by giving individuals scholarships.
With a vast variety of scholarships being handed out, they ranged from the athletic programs to the music community around Delaware.
Natalie Madden was one recipient that received two scholarships through the Delaware County Foundation and multiple through the school.
“I received the Mel Treese Scholarship, Larry Eberst Memorial Athletic Scholarship, Governor’s Merit Scholarship, and a scholarship from the Athletic Boosters,” Madden said.
The ceremony also recognized rising stars in athletics, with Kara Glesenkamp and Chaz Sakala getting recognized for their athletic achievements all throughout their high school careers and receiving the “Pride, Hustle, Win” award.
“I do both track and swimming. In both, I worked hard to be the best that I can at both of these sports and to accomplish as much as possible,” Glesenkamp said. “It was nice to be recognized for my athletics especially when there were so many deserving people.”
Going along with the rising stars, Garrett Brown was not short of recognition, as he received a multitude of awards that showcased his athletics and academics.
“I received the Agonis club scholarship, Delaware football boosters scholarship, Frank Shannon Jr. memorial scholarship and the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award,” Brown said. “I was very surprised to receive the Agonis and Frank Shannon Jr. scholarships because I didn’t realize I was eligible for them.”
Another notable scholarship was given to Isabelle Lazar. Lazar was pursuing the non-traditional route in getting a higher education in agriculture.
“I am an active member in FFA and 4-H, and studying [agricultural] education in college, [so] I qualified to be considered for them,” Isabelle Lazar said. “ I am going to OSU ATI to study agriscience education and my goal is to be an agricultural educator and an FFA advisor.”
The scholarships they received are all being sent to their college or university to help lower the cost of tuition. The local scholarship committees are a great way for students to get recognized for their success and commitments in high school.
