There is no doubt that Delaware City Schools has a strong music program.
The program, which is known throughout the community for its success, includes orchestra, choir and band opportunities.
In the past, the high school marching band has continuously been ranked “Superior,” the highest level, in competitions. The audition choir group, Hayes Singers, is recognized throughout the state.
Specialized classes beginning in the fifth grade offer students the opportunity to choose an instrument to focus on. By the time they get to middle school, the school offers year-long classes.
To help the program run smoothly, support groups such as Music Boosters and Cadence Club help boost morale and aid with finances. Cadence Club focuses on the Grand Pacer Marching Band and Guard, while Music Boosters is focused on choir and orchestra.
Further, Hayes puts on several concerts throughout the year to help acknowledge the efforts and accomplishments of music students. The concerts are usually focused on one music group, but sometimes include a combination. So far this school year, the high school has put on five music concerts, showcasing talent from each department.
However, the commitment given to music drastically lacks for other art forms in the district.
While Hayes has several concerts per year, the high school does not host any art shows. The closest thing to an art show is a display case in the art wing. The case displays talent from studio art classes, but is limited to a small selection of pieces per class.
The only two art shows that high school students can enter are the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition and the Art Castle’s student art show. These shows are not run by Hayes, and a teacher has to submit a student’s work.
Dempsey hosts only one art show at the end of the year, which combines middle school and elementary school art.
And, while high school students are able to take semester-long category-specific courses, Dempsey only offers four opportunities to take an art class: 6th Grade Art, 7th Grade Art, 8th Grade Art and Digital Art. Each class is only a quarter long, and students are not allowed to repeat the course.
The attention given to the music program is essential for students who are passionate about music, but it is also essential for other art classes. It helps students grow their talents and push themselves to a new level.
For example, when Delaware hosts concerts, it is helping to boost students’ morale for their abilities. It gives them something to look forward to and a purpose for their work; it is an excellent motivator for them to do their best. Art shows would have a similar effect on art students.
In general, the more a program is prioritized, the better it will do.
Therefore, Delaware City Schools need to value and show commitment to all art forms.
