This year, the Talisman is doing special features on 26 unique seniors throughout the school year to celebrate these past four years they’ve spent here. These students represent the different facets of the class of 2026 at Delaware Hayes.
Meet Nick:
Q: What activities are you involved in at Hayes?
A: I’m involved with the Hayes marching band as a colorguard member and the Hayes winterguard.
Q: Do you have any commitments outside of school?
A: Outside of school, I work at Menards and volunteer at the Humane Society of Delaware County.
Q: How did you balance your schoolwork with your other commitments?
A: I’ve had to learn how to balance school work as I’ve been involved with different things throughout high school; and I found what worked for me was having my deadlines written down and picking a study space that I can stay focused in.
Q: What is your favorite memory from Hayes?
A: My favorite memory from Hayes is Mr. Haynes settling the “100 Men Vs 1 Gorilla” debate in our AP GOV class.
Q: What has been your favorite class at Hayes and why?
A: AP Government and Politics was my favorite class because it was so much fun and I learned a lot—I even got a five on the AP Exam—and Mr. Haynes was such a good teacher that I was sad to learn he wouldn’t be teaching it anymore.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for future high schoolers?
A: One piece of advice I’d give incoming highschoolers would be to get as involved as you can because it not only makes high school more fun, it makes you look so much better to colleges as a well-rounded student.
Q: What is one thing you’ll miss when you’re gone?
A: One thing I’ll greatly miss is the people I’ve met here, particularly the underclassmen that look up to me in colorguard.
Q: What are your plans for after high school and why?
A: I’m planning to get my pre-veterinary degree in zoo conservation science at Drake University in Iowa. Getting my doctorate in veterinary medicine has been my dream for a while, and some day, I hope I can be a veterinarian at some cool place like the San Diego Zoo.
Good luck Nick! We are looking forward to seeing what you will achieve in these next steps.
