British singer-songwriter Raye put out UK chart-topper “Where is My Husband!” Sept. 19, 2025. After the release of two more singles, her second studio album, “This Music May Contain Hope,” arrived with a bang on Mar. 27, 2026.
“This Music May Contain Hope” is, undeniably, a bold and outstanding album. Stylistically, it incorporates jazz, blues, and big band techniques, among others, in a manner unlike anything else on the charts.
Raye charms and winds through these styles with skill and an excellent use of her vocal talents. She takes it a step further by bringing in an air of theatrical drama, especially highlighted in the introduction of several songs, where she directly speaks to the audience.
Despite how overwhelming this may seem at first glance, the songs are more appropriate for casual and easy listening. The uniqueness of Raye’s styles is blended with peppy energy and good vibes that expand her audience and make it easy to see how she has earned her popularity.
However, this is also where the album fails itself. On their own, the songs are charming, pleasant listens. When placed into the context of the album, this leaves them to fall flat.
When Raye opens the album, it is with “Intro: Girl Under The Grey Cloud.” It is the dramatic, cinematic opening reminiscent of a musical or an audio drama, not at all a typical piece of radio pop. This sets a mood and a level of expectation for the rest of the album that simply is not there. There is still energy and emotion to the later songs, but nothing that quite matches the originally established tone.
Although “This Music May Contain Hope” includes many lovely pieces, they work better as individually consumed pieces than as part of the greater whole. This isn’t at all unheard of for albums but, in this case, the concept of a greater and more theatrical use of the form of an album is teased and left unfulfilled. Raye’s work creates its own greatest issue.
Overall, this creates an interesting discussion about the use of music as an art, the place of theatre and musicals in relation to everyday pop music and the way that listening to music in different scenarios changes the perception of it. But, that’s beyond the range of this.
“This Music May Contain Hope” lives up to its titular warning with warm sounds, bright beats and good energy all around, intertwined with a style that stands out in the pop landscape. The music is open for anyone who enjoys fun, easy tunes, but is better off taken as individual songs than as the album all together.
